Vacation Hairstyle Ideas

Q: I'm going on a cruise and want a hairstyle that will be low maintenace and look good.

I have a almost shoulder length boob.

Should I get a sew in and if so what kind?

A: Hi There. When you're deciding on a hassle free hairstyle you really need to think about what purpose you want it to serve and what kind of activities you're planning for your vacation.

If you're going to be doing a lot of swimming, a weave will NOT be a care free hairstyle because water can and will ruin certain weave styles fast.

You'll have to think about how much time you're willing to devote to restyling your hair after every dip in the pool/sea.

It can be horrible news if the hair under your weave stays wet or damp for long period of time and it will weaken your hair badly.

For these reasons the official number one holiday hairstyle for many black women is braids.

Whether you get afro twists, cornrows or single braids they are totally "hands off" style free, easy to wash and dry and always looking good.

If on the other hand you're not going to be doing much swimming and just want to lay out ant look pretty, I'd go with a simple glue in with straight hair to add length and extra style, or a full head sew in with curly hair for a breezy and cute maintenance free look.

At the end of the day the choice is yours based on what you like, what you can afford and what your final goals for the function of the style are.

Hope this helps.

Styling Natural Hair For Vacation

Question: Styling Natural Hair For Vacation

I am going on vacation. I don't get perms, I go to the hairdresser to get my hair pressed and I always wear a wrap and I have never wore a weave, a wig, braids or anything. I always wear my own hair. I plan on going swimming but I don't know what to do with my hair. Any suggestions that involve not using weave?

Camille's Answer:

Hi Natasia, it sounds like your best bet would be to get a good set of braids put in before you go on vacation.

If you go with your hair out and get it wet it's going to revert and get poofy. So it's one of two things, get the braids put in or do the wash and wear thing with your hair and rock an afro proudly!

Why not just shampoo, condition, comb, brush & go?

The easiest hairstyle of all. Why put something in our hair, when our hair is already wonderful & perfect just the way it is, growing out of our scalp.

Clean, cut, condition, comb, curl: the 5 C's of great haircare. Or just cut it off! The notion that we are only beautiful with long hair is a mind trip to keep us slaves to the hairdresser, the products, the tools & the time it takes to maintain a hairstyle that most women won't get wet or even let their man touch.

How crazy is that? Hold your head up high, pull them shoulders back, put a smile on your face, walk with regal posture. Beauty is not how you look, it is how you feel. If you feel you are pretty, people will believe it, too.

I'm cute! Ain't you? Peace & Hair Grease, JB with love.

Anything BUT braids.

I'm also going on vacation soon and I DO NOT want braids because it takes too long to get.

I want something that won't take as long to do, as well as something I've never gotten before.

I was thinking about getting a wet and wavy weave or a deep wave weave, but I don't know how well it will hold up in chlorine and salt water.

Please help me!

Naturally Beautiful

Why not just continue to wear your own beautiful, natural hair? Why are Black women suddenly afraid of our own hair? Why has water, the ultimate moisturizer, become the enemy?

Wash it, put on extra conditioner, brush it back or up or over. Wrap it with a colorful scarf or headband to match your outfit. Just let it go & do its own thing.

When you learn to love your own hair, whatever the texture (& it's taken me over 40 years) you will feel so light & free & carefree. Also, get a crushable straw hat. Wash your hair every morning, slap on that conditioner, put on that straw hat

I have a different scarf or swatch of material to coordinate each outfit. People think I have all these different hats, but its the same hat with different bands. Or add a pin. At night before you go out to party, wash out the conditioner & voila! Beautiful hair.

We don't need glue, staples, stitches, extensions, & fake & false, our hair is beautiful, we are beautiful, just the way we are. Stop being a slave to the hairdressers & put that $ into a CD or 401K or a college fund.

Or, are you ready for this? Cut it all off! Down to an inch or 2. Would you rather someone say you have pretty hair or a pretty face? Hmm... Think about it. Put on a smile & some earrings, hold your head up, pull them shoulders back, walk like the Queen you are & go. Trust me, sister, it is truly liberating.

When you feel beautiful inside, you don't need hair or make-up ar a man, to make you feel beautiful. And no one can ever take away that feeling.

Styles For My Short Hair
by: keandra

My hair is shaved in the back and I have a bob. What else can I do to my hair? I'm frustrated. It's so hard for me to do something to my hair.

Camille's Comments:

Beyond growing your hair out, adding some hair, or covering it up with a wig, there's not much you can do when you cut your hair into such an unforgiving style.

Have fun with hair pieces or accessories while you wait for your own hair to grow out a bit!

Im Going To Florida
by: Anonymous

I don't know what to with my hair I normally wear tracks but during spring break I'm going to Florida where I'll be swimming a lot for about a week.

I don't know what to do with my real hair and I don't like just plain braids, so I was thinking about getting a wet n wavy sew in.

Is this a good idea? If so how much should I swim and what conditioner should I use on it how to keep it tamed and my hair underneath healthy?

Please help. Thanks
