My Face Is Not Clear!

About six years ago, I used to put excessive amounts of Vaseline around my mouth. I did this during the summertime. When school came around, I didn't want to put on the Vaseline.

The area around my mouth then became very, very dry. I would lick the area around my mouth to moisten it. It then became extremely taut, and it would burn.

At one point, it was white, and then red. After it became a problem, my mom took me out of school to see a doctor, who in turn said that it was just an allergic reaction to something I ate. She said that it would probably fade within a few weeks. It is still there till this day.

Around the fall of 2007, I began to use hydroquinone 4% cream and there was only a slight change. I am desperate to find some help with this problem because it is destroying my self-image and confidence. If you could please offer me any advice or insight or anything helpful in this matter, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you for your time.

Try glycolic acids and toning moisturizer...
by: Camille

I can relate to your problem because I used to suffer from chronic dry lips as well. I tried the Vaseline but it wasn’t really moisturizing, just greasy.

I just want to let you know that you’re beautiful even if you do not love the skin around your mouth at the moment. It can get better.

It’s all just a matter of getting the skin on your face to rejuvenate and get back to the normal texture, tone and color.

I don’t recommend using hydroquinone because over time it causes damage to black skin.

A better option is using a product with glycolic acids in it to gradually exfoliate your skin and bring it back to normal. In the mean time you can use a good moisturizer to add tone and help to refine the texture of your skin as well. Lastly, using a good Chap Stick type moisturizer with shea or cocoa butter infused into it will make a world of difference with your lips.

For the discoloration I’d suggest you find a good mineral powder foundation to cover it up till it gets back to normal on its own. Mineral makeup is light, covers flaws and won’t settle into the skin making the problem show up more.

What’s your skin care regimen like right now?

Hi! I am the author of My Face Is Not Clear. I just wanted to say thank you for responding. Your words of encouragement were extremely helpful!!! My skin regiment now is the hydroquinne 4% twice a day, and tretinoin .05% in the evenings. I've been using this for over a year and it doesn't really work. I've only seen a minimal improvement.
I looked up glycolic acid, and it seems that it is really helpful with the use of the aforementioned creams.
Please continue to help me!!!!
Thank you so very much

You're welcome!

Try the glycolic and let me know how it's working for you. Be sure not to use one that's too strong. It's better to use a weaker formulation and have it exfoliate gently.

I know how it is and we all want to see results yesterday but if there's one thing I've learned it's that slow and steady is always better.

Also, make sure to spot test an area before you put it all over your face in case you have an allergic reaction.

Good luck!
