Makeup Colors For Dark Skin

by Bola

Q: What colors go best for eye shadows and lipstick for ebony skinned ladies? Also recommend affordable products (are Mary Kay products aright?). I'm tired of experimenting with colors. Thanks

Camille's Answer:

Hi Bola. There's no simple answer to your first question. Dark skinned ladies can wear ANY color makeup. Browns, blues, purples, pinks, reds, and anything in between. The key to making it look right is the undertones of the shade that is used.

Stay away from lighter colors with silvery undertones and stick to rich colors with gold undertones. That way you'll escape the ashy look and sport a deeper look that will compliment your exotic features and skin tone.

Check out this picture featuring one of my makeup inspirations Mr Sam Fine. Look at this tones and colors he uses on this chocolate sista. Gorgeous and ash free!

As for the makeup. I have makeup that costs $35 for a 4oz tube and I have makeup that costs 99cents and there's no single line of makeup I swear by (yet!). One thing you'll never escape is the need to try things. Your best bet though is to head to the mall and hit up the makeup counters.

If the line is worth anything they'll not only give you samples right there at the counter, you might be able to get an application done for you by the makeup girls.

So keep experimenting the free and cheap way (amples) until you fine what compliments you the most.

Makeup for really dark skin
by: Anonymous

What's the name of the make up that works for dark skinned ladies?

Camille's Comment:

There are quite a few lines of makeup that cater to women with darker skin tones.

- Iman
- Maybelline
- Cover Girl
- Black Radiance
- Fashion Fair
- Black Opal
- Milani

These are a great place to start; just be sure to test match your foundation in good natural lighting to be sure it's not too light or too dark and that the undertones are right.
