Will Braids Damage My Hair?

by Karen
(Indianapolis, IN )

I have short hair currently and I sweat and workout 5-6 days a week. It really dry's my hair out.

I would like to get braids or a weave to grow my natural hair out and take a break from perms and hot curls for a while.

Will braids cause my hair to fall out?

A: Short answer...NO!

Braids do not cause anyone's hair to fall out and anyone who tells you otherwise isn't being truthful.

The INCORRECT use a braids causes hair to come out.

- Putting braids in too tight.
- Wearing braids for too long.
- Not caring for your hair under the braids.
- Using the wrong products on braided hair.
- Removing braids from hair incorrectly.

Any of these cause problems for people with braided hair, but the braids themselves aren't the enemy.

Braids are actually the perfect hairstyle for black women with physically active lifestyles.

Just make sure to consult with a professional braider to find out exactly what you need to be doing with your braids to keep them and your own hair looking healthy and beautiful.
