Are there any home remedies for breaking hair follicles? I can't afford hair products.

Follicles and hair breakage...
by: Camille

Hi Deresa!

Hair breakage is one of the biggest problems that black hair faces and I think everyone has suffered from it at one point including myself. It's very easy to remedy though.

Hair breakage happens when your hair gets weak because of over processing and under conditioning.

The way for you to fix it is to stop or really cut down on any chemical treatments you do to you hair and step up the conditioning with protein and moisturizing treatment.

I suggest you try using either an olive oil or coconut oil treatment in your hair once a week for 30 minutes.

Warm about a half cup of the oil in a small pan (don't overheat or it will burn you) then put it all over your hair from roots to ends, cover with a plastic cap then either sit under a bonnet dryer or wrap your hair in a hot towel for 30 minutes.

That's it!

You can also use the same oils on the end of your hair as an everyday hairdress.

Also one of the best things you can use on your scalp to stimulate growth is castor oil and a scalp massage every other day.

I see that in the pic your hair was very healthy, shiny and full!

Can you tell me what you've been doing to your hair (your daily regimen) since you noticed the breakage happening?

Waiting to hear back from you...

P.S. What's in the plate girl? Looks good!

I am sorrry coconut oil is worse on hair that has been permed. It used to make my hair luscious and thick till I permed it. Then my hair will sor of refuse to take the oil and problems started. Olive oil is horrible for my hair. It makes it dry and brittle. I dont konw about castor oil - isnt it too greasy for daily use.

Castor oil is for the scalp...Coconut oil is for hot oil treatments.

Hi Anonymous,

Coconut oils is one of the BEST natural oils you could ever use on your hair, permed or natural.

Perhaps your particular hair doesn't respond well to hot oil treatments, that doesn't mean they don't work. Also you could try adding the oils to a regular creamy deep conditioner.

BWBC Tip: Add oils only to moisturizing treatments.

Oils put on the end of your hair daily seal in the moisture that you put into your hair from washing and regular/deep conditioning and keep the hair ends supple preventing breakage in the long run.

As for the Castor oil, I'm not suggesting that you pour a bottle of it over your scalp everyday. If you dip your fingers in it and lightly massage your scalp daily or 2-3 times a week it will help to stimulate growth.

Hope this helps. If you need something in particular cleared up please ask!
