Preparing Hair For A Relaxer Step By Step

Here are tips on preparing hair for a relaxer. Never suffer through burns or over processing again!

What You Need

  • Scalp Basing Gel
  • Hair Conditioner
  • Hands
  • 4 Hair Clips
  • Tail Comb

Step 1

  • Part your dry hair into four sections going horizontally from ear to ear and vertically from the middle of your forehead to the nape of your neck. Pin each section up with a hair clip.

Step 2

  • Start parting thin strips of hair and use scalp base in a small tipped bottle to apply a thin line of gel to your scalp.

Step 3

  • Continue making thin parts and applying the base to your scalp until you’ve done your whole head. Keep the four sections separated for when you start applying the relaxer crème.

Step 4

  • Apply the base gel all the way around your hairline, making sure to cover the top of your forehead, ears and the nape of your neck completely.

Step 5

  • Using gloved hands, rub the same hair basing gel or a creamy conditioner between your hands.
  • Work it in to each section of hair starting just above the line of demarcation (where the new growth meets previously relaxed hair) until your hair is completely pretreated.

Tips For Protecting Your Hair And Scalp

  • Always pre-treat the ends of your hair with conditioner to avoid over processing.
  • Feel free to add more base gel to your hairline if you feel like it’s melting away.
  • You can substitute the base gel with petroleum jelly but a water based gel based product is much easier to rinse out.
