Want Tips On How To Prevent Split Ends?

Learn how to prevent split ends and damage.

What really causes hair ends to become split and frayed?

Frayed ends happen because of heat, friction and chemical processing drying out the hair shaft and creating breaks and tears in the cuticle (outer) layer of the hair.

Split End Causing Culprits

Not moisturizing the ends of your hair properly of often enough also makes them prone to drying out and splitting.

The bad news about this problem is that you can’t repair a hair end that’s already split. The only solution is to cut it off to keep it from traveling up the length of your hair.

Let’s look at some of the things you can do to stop splits from ever becoming a problem.

How To Prevent Split Ends From Happening

There's a lot you can do (and stop doing) to eliminate split ends and keep them from coming back. Here are three of the most important ones.

Dust Your Ends

Dusting is a form of trimming hair. Instead of taking off half an inch you cut a micro portion of hair.

  • A sharp pair of scissors and a good eye is all you need.
  • Part your hair into small sections and clip 1/6th of an inch off the ends.
  • If your hair is healthy, doing this once every other month will keep splits at bay.

Do Wet Sets Or Air Dry

Get your hair dry with wet sets or air drying instead of blow drying and you’ll cut out damaging friction and heat. Stick to the healthy wet set styles.

Flat Iron with Care

If you can go without using hot tools your hair will instantly be healthier. If you don’t see yourself living without your flat or curling iron here are some tips to keep them from damaging your hair.

  • Always use them on clean, conditioned hair.
  • Spray your hair with a light alcohol free heat protectant before using any form of heat.
  • Use your hot tool on a low to medium setting. You don’t have to deep fry your hair to get it straight.
  • Don’t heat style more than twice a week. Maintain the straightness or curl of your hair with wrapping or pin curls.

Using an effective deep conditioning treatment with every wash also helps to keep your hair strong against splits.
