How do I retain moisture? I no longer perm (last perm was in 2003) so my hair is pretty much virgin at this point. It is desert dry and breaking. Help!
I love this question because my darling mother has a gorgeous head of graying hair and she also complains a lot about the dryness the grays tend to have.
The best treatment for it is to find a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner formulated for gray hair. I recommend shimmer lights products for this because they’ve always been the best for keeping gray hair beautiful and take away the brassy look grays tend to get.
Along with that do deep moisturizing treatments with a thick conditioner, plastic cap and a quality bonnet dryer for about 30 minutes whenever you wash (once or twice a week is good).
Alternate the moisturizing treatments with a good protein conditioner once every 4-6 weeks.
Finish up with a good leave in conditioner to lock in the moisture and a daily hair dress to keep the softness and suppleness in your hair until the next wash.
Here are my recommendations for you.
Shampoo and conditioner – Shimmer lights (follow the time limits so your hair doesn’t turn blue!)
Deep conditioner – If you don’t already have a favorite you’ll need to try different ones to find what works best for you.
Sticking to a regimen like this and doing it once or twice a week will get your hair back to the right moisture balance and help strengthen it up so it won’t break easily.
Lastly, you never mentioned it but it might be time for a trim as well to get rid of all the lifeless breaking ends and start fresh with a healthier head of hair.
