Q: My hair is past my shoulders, but I have terrible split ends. How can I prevent them coming back after I trim my hair?

I'd also like to know what type of comb you use.

Some Tips For Split Ends
by: Camille

Hi Chicqueeta!

There are a few main things that cause splits.

- Bad combs
- Excess heat
- Over processing
- Under conditioning
- Letting your hair dry out

Are you guilty of any of these things?

Luckily these are all problems you can stop easily and start reversing the damage to your hair, but you'll have to develop healthy hair habits to see results.

What do you need to do? Stick with the pillars of healthy hair.

1. Start using the right combs and brushes (seamless bone combs and paddle brushes like the ones from Denman).

2. Start using healthy and gentle heat methods to style your hair, which you can only get from air drying and or using a bonnet dryer.

3. If your hair tends to get over processed when you relax that means your stylist is either leaving it in too long or overlapping. The solution here is to be strict on relaxing time and stretch out the time between relaxers so you have more new growth (less likely to overlap).

4. Developing an excellent conditioning regimen is a make or break for your hair health. You need to find a balance between protein and moisture and discover the products that will work for you.

5. Lastly you need to be using some type of moisturizing hair dress on the ends of your hair everyday (twice if you need to) to seal in the moisture in the ends to stop them from drying out and breaking.

Wearing protective styles helps out with this a lot too.

The combs I use were the bone combs form tenderheaded.com and they've since stopped stocking them. If you do a search on ebay.com you can find them from a company called hairsense.com (cheaper on ebay than on their main website).

Since I went natural I’ve hardly combed my hair (started locking) but when I do others hair I will only use bone combs.

I'd recommend that you join our forum so we can help you to develop a regimen that will stop your split ends for good and help to keep your hair healthy and strong.

Hope this helps and let me know when you do join the forum so we can get started right away.
