Hair Breaking Off In One Spot

Q: I have an issue with my hair breaking off in one certain section of my head. It's always in that same spot and I don't know what to do. The rest of my hair seems fine. Is there any reason for this?

A: There's always a reason for hair breaking off even if it's not very noticeable at first.

You didn't say what spot on your head keeps breaking (nape, crown, edges) but spot breakage is usually caused by one of the following things.

1. Wearing the hair in the same over and over.
2. Pulling the hair too tight in the same spot.
3. Over processing the same spot.
4. Resting the head on the same spot.
5. Unconscious "picking" in the same spot (hair twirling, etc)
6. Hair weakened by heat styling in one spot.

Usually the way to treat it is to first pinpoint what's happening with the section of hair and if it's any of the above, just stop doing it and the hair will stop breaking.

If it's none of the above and the hair is still breaking it may just be a matter of strengthening your hair with regular deep protein treatments.

Hair Breakage In One Spot Every Year
by: destarin

Q: My hair breaks of in the same spot (right side/back of crown)every year at the same time. Any comments?

Camille's Answer:

It sounds like you could be experiencing seasonal shedding is this happens to you every year and in the same spot.

If it's definitely breakage and not shedding the answer is to increase your conditioning treatments during the time when you usually have the breakage.

Make sure you balance protein and moisture treatments so you hair doesn't become too brittle or too limp.

My hair is breaking off in the back left side?
by: Dawnn

My hair has been doing this for the better part of seven months now and it is on the same side of my head.

I just notice that when I perm that side it does not perm for longer then a few days?

Please tell me what is wrong with my hair and how do I fix it, I have been using different products to try and strength it and I have also cut my hair to match the breakage part and it is still falling out.

The perm does not last long, so I thought it was from my working out daily. Do you have any help for me please.

Camille's Answer:

The problem might be one of several things:

- The relaxer you're using isn't getting the job done.
- Your hair's PH is off causing extra porosity.
- Your hair is damaged and needs an intensive restructuring with a heavy duty product like Aphogee.

Tell me, after you work out what do you do with your hair? Do you rinse the sweat out of your head?

Also, do you use curling irons or flat irons to style your hair?

Please let me know.

Left Side Crown Breaking Off
by: Anonymous

My hair also breaks off at the crown left side and I find it very frustrating. I'm not sure what to do.

I have very course hair and it breaks easily. I also notice that I could stand getting perms on the 5th week but waiting until the 6th week causes breakage and I get a very itchy scalp. It's like I could scratch my scalp to death at times.

I can't go past one week without washing it and it's very dry as well.

The above usually happens around this time (December, January, February into March) and after that it really picks up but I still have to be careful with it all year long.

I keep my hair cut short because that's when it looks it's healthiest.

Any suggestions?

Camille's Answer:

Hi Anon.

It sounds like you're dealing with a chronic case of dry hair and scalp.

Usually in the winter months which is the time you say you have the problem the most, we stay indoors with heating and that helps to dry the hair and scalp out even more causing the itches to be almost unbearable.

Also, dry hair is most likely the reason you have a hard time stretching relaxers beyond the 5 weeks mark.

I think every person who has relaxed hair has the ability to stretch to at least the 8 week mark (I used to go as long as 16 weeks when I had a relaxer and I have type 4a hair).

The key is to wash and deep condition your hair with a good creamy moisturizing conditioner and/or oil, a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for about half an hour to help it penetrate.

When you do this your hair will be much easier to comb and handle. On top of that you need to use a moisturizing cream (not hair grease) with natural oils to seal the moisture into your hair and ends.

Hair Breakage just on Top
by: Angela B.

My hair is breaking off on the top, from crown to front. It's been about 4 inches for 7 months. I have not permed in 6 months and I haven't used heat in a year.

I color my grey with a temporary rinse, every 2 months. I have used reconstructing conditioner, leave in conditioner and protein conditioner.

The rest of my hair is growing fast, and it's past my shoulders. I basically have a mullet.

Any advice ?

Camille's Comments:

I'm interested in finding out how you wear your hair on a daily basis and what you do to style it.

I would go to a stylist you trust and have a good DEEP trim done to remove all the damaged and over processed ends from your hair and also to get your hair into a style that makes sense and had some structure to it. This will actually not only look better in general but will help your hair stay healthier.

How often are you washing and deep conditioning your hair and do you moisturize regularly?

If you're doing all these things and staying away from heat and chemicals your hair shouldn't be breaking.

If you are doing everything right and breakage is still a big issue for you, might need to take vitamins or consult with a medical professional to see if the problem is stemming from inside and not the outside.
