What Causes Hair Breakage?

Here are some of the things that cause your hair to break.

Split Ends

  • If your hair is split its much weaker at the ends.
  • Combing and brushing make little pieces break off.

Over Processing

  • This is caused by relaxing or coloring sooner than every 8 weeks.
  • If hair doesn’t grow out enough between services, the chemicals overlap on to older processed hair.
  • This breaks down the layers of the hair creating weak spots.

Double Processing

  • Relaxing and coloring at the same time leads to disaster.
  • The general rule is - if you relax, don't color and if you color, don't relax.

Too Much Handling

  • Too much combing, brushing and washing lead to hair breakage.
  • Your hair is delicate and you should treat it that way.
  • Do your hair a favor and give it a break.

Wearing Hair Down

  • Hair worn down rubs against your clothes, gets caught in things and breaks.

Not Enough Moisture

Rough Handling

  • If you’re rough with your hair because it’s thick and tangled, you're your own worst enemy.
  • Black hair looks strong but it's very delicate by nature.
  • Treat your hair like a piece of silk and you'll see a lot less breakage.

Sleeping on Cotton Pillow Cases

  • Cotton absorbs moisture and dries your hair out.
  • The fibers also grab and tear your hair while you sleep.

How To Repair Hair Breakage

Here are some tips to help strength your hair against breakage.

Use a Good Protein Treatment

  • Reinforce your hair with a protein treatment that helps it stand up to chemicals and harsh products.

Use Moisturizing Shampoos and Conditioners

Stretch Out Your Services

  • Have at least an inch of new growth before you get your hair done. This, along with pre-treating your hair, cuts down on over processing.

Wear Protective Hairstyles

  • Keep your hair in protective styles to help shield it from the air and other elements that make split ends form faster.

Use Silk and Satin at Night

  • Silk or satin pillowcases and head ties are the only things that should come in contact with your hair while you sleep. These fabrics don't 'catch' your hair and make it break off.

Get a Trim

  • Stop split ends from traveling up the hair shaft by trimming them off. Don't trim if you don't need it. What's the point of cutting healthy hair?

You can stop breakage and turn your hair around by doing less of the wrong things and more of the right things.
