Flat Iron Recommendations

Q: I'm looking for some good flat iron recommendations. I'm black with short cropped hair that I use a Paul Mitchell flat iron to style.

I got mine as a gift and have had it for years. It finally gave out and I wanted to replace it but they are SUPER expensive.

Any recommendations for a new flat iron that does the same kind of job without all the cost?

A: Hi. I can relate to wanting something that works just as well as what you're used to without the heafty price tag.

I've been natural for over 3 years and loc'ed for over 2 but I can't seem to part with my flat irons from my relaxed days because they are SO awesome.

Here there are...

I even took the smaller one to my salon for my stylist to use on me and she loved it so much I ended up giving her one for Christmas. LOL

They're great irons, sturdy, precise and have a wide range of heat level options.

You should be able to find them at a Sally's near you.

Flat Irons Verses Relaxers?

Flat Irons Verses Relaxers?

I'm hearing so much that African-American women are skipping relaxers altogether to use flat irons for the same results OR texlaxing then using flat irons.

Is there any one method better or less damaging than the other? Or any insights on the options?

Camille's Answer:

Hi Felicia. This is nothing new at all but it looks like more and more women are catching on and it's saving hair all over the world!

Black hair doesn't and never has NEEDED a relaxer to have the look and feel of relaxed hair. What it boils down to is ease, reversion tolerance and personal preference.

1. Ease

Having your hair straight right off the bat is obviously much easier than getting that same hair blow dried and "pressed" with a flat iron every week.

If you're a woman who doesn't have that kind of time to devote sitting in a stylist chair then perhaps a relaxer is "better" for you.

2. Reversion Tolerance

I have a sister (who is a member of our online community) who has the kind of hair that no matter how perfectly coiffed it is before a night out on the town, usually ends up looking puffy and frizzy in humid weather before the night is out.

I on the other hand had relaxed hair (I'm natural now) that could stand up to anything and still come out looking perfect.

If your hair tends to react badly to moisture in the air, from sweat, etc. It would probably make more sense for you to relax.

3. Personal Preference

This one speaks for itself. Some people just like their stick straight relaxed hair and there's nothing wrong with that.

All that said, not relaxing your hair is always the healthiest option because there's no chemical damage done to the hair and no chances of it happening.

If you have hair that does well with pressing (which is basically what they're doing with the flat iron) then by all means go natural and press your hair.

That way you'll be able to go back and forth between a natural or relaxed look whenever you please, and along with a good deep conditioning regiment you will have exceptionally healthy hair.

Where the two roads meet is with the telaxing option along will the flat iron.

Your hair can stay very healthy with this option as well but it also makes it much easier for you to get a very straight and longer lasting "press" for some people than with 100% virgin hair.

So to sum it up...YES...BOTH of these options are healthier than relaxing your hair bone straight (if done properly), but the deciding factor on which to do rests in your hands based on the factors I gave above.
