Dandruff And Hair Breakage

Q: I have relaxed hair and recently starting getting dandruff problems. I think this contributed to hair breakage in a section the middle of my head.

This problem still persists and now I realize that this same section is/seems somehow under processed after a week of two of getting a touch-up done at the hair dressers. Please help.

A: It's not impossible but it's very unlikely that your dandruff issue is causing the hair breakage. These two things have nothing to do with each other really.

Based on the fact that...

1. You've recently developed scalp flaking.
2. Your hair is breaking at the top section of your head.
3. Your hair has been under processed.

I would ask your stylist if she has switched the type of relaxer she's usually uses in your hair.

If she has that might be the problem and your hair just doesn't respond well to the one she's using now.

If she hasn't then it might be time for a change. Occasionally relaxers that usually work for us become ineffective after a while.

To help your scalp you can look into doing rinses with apple cider vinegar (1 gallon of water with 1 cup of ACV in it).

Give yourself deep conditioning treatments with moisture and protein and that will help a lot with the breakage and the under processed hair.

Hair breakage! what is my hair trying to tell me
by: Mzkea

I recently started my hair journey independently after not achieving any length past shoulder with my stylist after over 10 yrs. I have had some breakage for since starting my journey but cannot figure out why, I will give you my regiment:

(BTW,I am relaxed, last relaxer 10/24/09)
I wash once a week, alternating with Hair one hair cleanser and creme of nature moisturizing shampoo, always prepooing with extra virgin coconut oil or EVOO for 30 or over night prior to pooing.

Next I use aphogee 2min keratin reconstructor, then deep condition with Silk elements deep conditioners(30 min under dryer). After that I either roller set or air dry until hair is about 60-70% then braid and wear half wigs to eliminate manipulating my hair.

I moisturize and seal daily with profective moisturizer and coconut oil. and also apply Jamaican black Castor oil pomade to my scalp ( just started 5 days ago). I know they say you should listen to your hair, but I'm not understanding the language it's speaking!

Please help!

Camille's Answer:

Hi Mzkea! You have a very through regimen going on there and I have to say that I'm proud of your for taking so much pride and care in your crown and glory.

It first glance it would see that you are doing everything by the book so why the breakage?

The only thing I would change in your regimen is using the reconstructor with every wash.

It's not know by a lot of women, but using too much protein can actually damage your hair.

Try doing the protein treatment once every 4-6 weeks and focusing on your moisturizing deep conditioner on the other wash days.

Everything else you do sounds just fine, but I'd like to know what your trimming schedule is like.

Ten years is a LONG time to be working on growth and length and not seeing any progress.
