Is Your Comb Destroying Your Hair?
Did you know that that innocent looking comb sitting on your dresser could be what's keeping your hair from being its best?
![]() I need you to get the comb you use to style your hair every day and look at it for a few seconds. Do you see a ridge going down the middle? If you do, that means the comb is machine manufactured and is probably made out of plastic. I bet you’re thinking that most of the combs you grew up using were plastic and had this ridge so what’s the harm in that...right? Well sorry to break it to you, but much more than you know! Take your finger and run it along the ridge of the comb. Does it feel rough to you? If you were to take a microscope and look at that ridge you'd see what looks like tiny saw blades with raggedy teeth, perfect for doing some major cutting. Well guess what? That’s exactly what it’s doing to your hair! Every time you run one of those combs through your hair you’re creating tiny rips, tears and cuts, especially the ends. I know you can’t see it but believe me it is happening. The result of doing this over time is your comb destroying your hair leading to shredded, weakened hair that’s prone to split ends and breakage. Not exactly a pretty picture if hair health and growth are your top priority. So, what can you do to stop the problem of the comb destroying your hair? The answer is simple...use bone combs! Now don’t go confusing this with a bone colored comb. Those are just as cheap as the pink, purple and blue ones. The original bone combs were made from actual bone and fashioned into the comb shape. I know that sounds creepy, but here’s the reasoning behind it. Bone is smooth and doesn’t have the ridges or little hacksaw edges that rip your precious hair to shreds. They won’t catch your hair and they don’t cause damage over time. These days bone combs are known as “bohn” combs and are made from organic resins which make them hard, smooth and able to stand up to high heat (perfect for use with a (quality) blow dryer. These fabulous little hair savers are pricier than their hair shredding counterparts but they don’t cost an arm and a leg either. They range from around five to fifteen dollars but believe me, the benefits you’ll get for the price are more than worth it. Plus if you get a good set of bone combs I guarantee you’ll wear out before they do! Bone combs come in all different shapes and sizes but I recommend three that will cover all your styling needs. These are a tail comb, wide tooth comb and medium sized rake comb. If you're still using a plastic comb in your hair it’s time to get with the program and get a good set of bone combs. Your hair will thank you for it and splits and breakage will be a thing of the past!
