How To Use Coconut Oil For Hair

Coconut oil is vegetable based oil that comes from the coconut kernel or meat (duh right?). It’s always been very popular among people in India, Asia and the Caribbean but in recent times the rest of the world has been catching on.

The high level of saturated fatty acids is what makes coconut oil so effective in its different uses. If you’ve ever seen a bottle you’ll notice that at room temperature it’s solid. It doesn’t take much more than normal body heat to liquefy it.

What’s The Scoop On Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is one of the only oils that can actually penetrate the hair shaft. That’s why it’s very effective and has been used for centuries in hair treatments and dressings.

Here are some of the benefits of using coconut oil for hair care.

• Dandruff control.
• Adds body and shine to dull lifeless hair.
• Moisturizes, softens and conditions dry hair.
• Strengthens hair from inside the shaft.
• Prevents split ends.
• Smoothes roughness in the hair.
• Increases hair growth (because of less damage and breakage).

The fact that coconut oil smells like heaven doesn’t hurt either!

The best type of coconut oil for hair is virgin oil that hasn’t been processed. The good thing about this is that it’s very easy to find. Check the oil section of your local grocery or health food store. The oil is inexpensive and should last about two years before it goes bad.

How Do You Use Coconut Oil For Hair?

Coconut oil for hair can be used as a main ingredient in shampoos and conditioners. Here are two recipes you can use to make your own and instructions on how to use them.

Coconut Oil Shampoo

• 2 Teaspoons Virgin Coconut Oil
• 1 Tablespoon Castile Soap
• 1/2 Cup Water or Herbal Tea

Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly in a bottle and use it as you would your normal shampoo.

Coconut Oil Conditioner

• 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
• 1 Tablespoon Sweet Almond Oil

Put the coconut oil into a small saucepan and heat it gently till it melts. Add the sweet almond oil and combine the two ingredients thoroughly.

Coat your hair from roots to tips with the oil treatment and cover with a plastic cap. Either use a hot towel to wrap around your head or sit under a bonnet dryer for 15 minutes.

Rinse completely and follow up with your shampoo and conditioner.
