All About Dreadlocks - Pictures and Styling Techniques

Ever wondered about dreadlocks? Locs, Dreads, Natty. Many words have been used to describe dreadlocked hair.

But one thing always remains the same, and that's the fact that locs are beautiful and traditionally a black hair style.

Dreds shouldn't be confused with 'Rasta', short for Rastafarian, which is a religious culture that originated in Jamaica. Just keep in mind, most rastas wear dreads but every dred isn't a rasta!

A great thing about dreadlocks is that they are regal and reflect the true essence of blackness. Black women who wear dreads tend to have a very strong connection with their ethnicity and culture.

The best thing about dreadlocks is that they're gorgeous and can show off the beauty of your natural black hair and ethnic features like no other hairstyle can.

There are lot of reasons why dreadlocks have become so popular.

  • More black women want their natural hair (no chemicals neccessary)

  • It helps keep natural hair neat

  • Simple to maintain on your own

  • Less time spent on hair

  • No worries about humidity and weather effects on a style!

  • It simply looks fantastic!

There are different types of locs and depending on the end result you want there are several techniques to create them.

Free Form
Known as the "original" dreadlocks. This kind forms when the hair is left to do its own thing. The coils wrap around each other in an unpredictable way. The result is usually a little too "messy" for most people.

How to Dread Hair - Sisterlocks Method
A locking technique developed by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell that makes the locks very thin so they have more variety in styling options. This style is best for people who want to transition to locs without cutting off relaxed hair.

Bradelocks
A locking technique developed by Cherie King where the locs are started with individual braids/plaits in the hair.

Palm Rolls
The name of this technique says it all. The locs are rolled between the palms of the hands to form them into coils. Over time this results in a very smooth loc appearance.

Latchhook
This technique uses a crochet hook to form the locs. It's also used to tighten the hair at the roots as it grows out.

If you want to go natural but don't think you could manage it try to learn some more about dreadlocks, they might be just the thing for you. Don't be afraid to explore your options. Research the different techniques and the looks they produce. When you find one that appeals to you...go for it!

Don't believe the hype! Going long periods without washing your hair won't make it grow. It'll just make it very dirty.
